The Mere Pounamu (nephrite weapon), greenstone, were used in close hand to hand combat. It is also a symbol of MANA (authority), status, cultural identity and important in relationships.
Mere Pounamu are no longer used in battle, but their symbolic role still remains and continues.
This Mere Pounamu in particular is quite heavy in weight and is a very standard size for a patu (club).
