TE MANAWA ORA

MEANJIN

BRISBANE

"Meanjin" which is the original name for what we now know as Brisbane

was founded upon the homelands of the Turrbal and Jagera Peoples.

Meanjin is derived from the Turrbal word for 'SPIKE' of the land it sits on.

Referencing the shape of the Brisbane River along the area that the Brisbane CBD now straddles.

Te Timatatanga

From the humble beginnings in a park in Kingston to the transition to the Crestmead Community Centre in 2012.  Since then Te Manawa Ora has had steady progression and a growing interest in what the group has to offer.

The picture on left shows the very first Te Manawa Ora waananga along with the founding members of Te Manawa Ora.  We also had present, Mike Mato (Te Tairaawhiti\Waikato) who resides in Brisbane and Paul Burns (Chinese decent) and Ronnie Puru (Ngaati Hine\Ngaapuhi) who came in from Geelong, Victoria.

The very first grading waananga however, was held at the Jacobs Well Environmental Centre.

This particular waananga marked a significant milestone, marking the moment where the group solidified its identity with the name 'Te Manawa Ora'.
